Welcome to Cake Decorating Mommy

 Cake Decorating For Beginners

I want to welcome each of you to Cake Decorating Mommy.  If you are on my site today that means that you are like me, and probably thousands of others, who are looking to become the next Cake Boss or the next Duff.  Okay, not exactly that high a caliber, but at least wanting to be able to produce a birthday cake or anniversary cake that will really WOW the people around you.  Cake decorating may seem scary and difficult but with a little blood, sweat, and tears…or butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla, you will be well on your way to making an amazing creation.

Anyone Can Decorate Cakes

Some might think that cake decorating is only for professionals.  But the truth is…

ANYONE CAN DO IT!

As a matter of fact, I did it.  I am NOT a professional, I have never taken a class, a lesson, never went to school for anything culinary…Nothing!  I learned everything that I will share with you on this site from the internet.  I researched for hours, I watched youtube videos, I watched Cake Boss and Cupcake Wars and I found that once I gave it a try and did a little practicing, I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

The Cookie that Started It All.

The Cookie that Started It All.

For those who haven’t read my About Amanda page, my cake decorating journey started with a large 12 inch round cookie that I wanted to decorate for my daughter’s 2nd birthday.  It was my first attempt at doing any kind of decorating that didn’t involve spreading frosting on top of the 9×13 cake that was still in the pan, and writing Happy Birthday on it.  I just wanted to create something cool that would, in all honesty, impress my in-laws and my husband.  And this is what happened…I fell in love with cake decorating.  Yes, I know, this was a cookie, so technically at the time I fell in love with cookie decorating, but I knew it could be so much more with cakes.

All It Really Takes Is Some IMAGINATION

Summer 2014 Campout Themed Wedding Cake

Honestly, after you find the frosting that works best for you and tastes great, the only thing that you need is your imagination.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I too have sat there for days contemplating how I was going to pull off a design after someone asked me to make a fishing/campout themed wedding cake, and figuring out what you are going to do can be the most stressful part of it all, but that’s why the internet is so helpful.  I spent hours looking on Google Images for ideas of campout themed cakes to come up with a design and when it was all said and done, it turned out beautiful.  At the time of this cake, I had been decorating for about two and a half years on and off.

Like Riding A Bike

Being a stay-at-home mom, and a homeschooling mom at that, plus currently having an infant at home, I have not done nearly as many cakes as I had done before our new arrival, but once you start learning, it really is like riding a bicycle.  Once you learn, you never forget and you get better with time.  On Cake Decorating Mommy I will be sharing with you my favorite recipes and tutorials, along with sharing my process for upcoming and past cakes.  Please feel free to leave me a comment or share with me your stories of cake successes and failures, favorite recipes and sites that you go to for cake decorating advice.  I would love to hear from you all.

God Bless,

Amanda
